Petition to Amend the Proposed Legislation for the Mandatory Fortification of Flour with Folic Acid

We, the undersigned, respectfully request that the Food Standards Agency incorporate an opt-out clause into any legislation requiring the mandatory fortification of flour with folic acid for historic wind and water mills using horizontal mill stones.

We believe that it is impractical for historic wind and water mills to install the required equipment both from the perspective of cost and listed building status. The proposed legislation as drafted, if implemented, will cause historic wind and water mills to close unless they can continue to produce flour using traditional methods.  This would be an unacceptable outcome putting in jeopardy an important and living tradition, part of our industrial heritage.
